Mission

Mission

The Hemispheric Institute gathers artists, scholars, writers, learners, and activists from across the Americas. We focus on social justice and research politically engaged culture and performance. We share this work in digital archives and amplify it through dialogues and public scholarship, residencies, publications, and gatherings. Our dynamic, multilingual network crosses disciplines and borders, and is grounded in the fundamental belief that artistic practice and critical reflection can spark lasting cultural change.

Founded in 1998 at New York University, Hemi has built an Americas-wide network that includes over 60 member universities and affiliated cultural centers, dozens of collaborating human rights and social justice organizations, and thousands of individuals who participate in our programs. Hemi offers an anti-colonial model for engagement between ‘north’ and ‘south’ by promoting multi-sited, multilingual collaborations and acknowledging everyone as a potential producer of art and knowledge. Hemi convenes large-scale international gatherings every two years; publishes original scholarship via online platforms; supports emerging artists, scholars, and activists; and historically preserves documentation of performance practices.

Network

Hemi is animated by its network institutions. Each organization contributes its local knowledge to create a network far more powerful than any single entity. In addition to participating in the vision and practice of Hemi, member institutions gain enhanced access to Hemi’s digital authoring tools, online archives, and other pedagogical resources. Faculty and students also have opportunities to propose work groups, participate in graduate-level courses, and engage with an active, Americas-wide network to address pressing social issues.

Land Acknowledgement

The Hemispheric Institute at New York University acknowledges with respect the Lenape nation,  whose traditional homelands NYU now occupies. We recognize the longstanding significance of these territories for Lenape nations past and present. We acknowledge that we work in a city with the largest urban Native population in the United States. Even as we work to increase the historical awareness of Indigenous exclusion and erasure, we acknowledge the effect of that legacy in educational institutions, at NYU, and across the hemisphere. We are committed to work revealing Indigenous history and life-worlds and to the inclusion of Indigenous voices and participation, in allyship with Indigenous makers and communities across the Americas.
